Measuring Emotional
Intensity

Intensity is a natural tendency to experience strong emotions when frustrated or faced with obstacles.

Emotional Intensity Soft Skills

Understanding whether a candidate leans more relaxed or more intense is critical to understanding how they will experience emotions when faced with a work challenge.

Personality assessments helps employers by measuring the intensity of prospective candidates so they understand where on the spectrum a candidate falls, and what impact this is likely to have on their ability to succeed in the role.

Emotional Intensity in the Workplace

Relaxed: People with lower intensity experience emotions less strongly when frustrated. They tend to seem more relaxed and approachable when facing a conflict or obstacle.

Intense: People with higher intensity tend to experience higher levels of emotion when frustrated or facing conflicts and obstacles. Whether or not this emotion is displayed outwardly depends on a person’s level of responsiveness.

Roles requiring high Intensity:

  • Creative Director
  • Fitness Instructor
  • On-Air Talent
  • Physical Therapist

Berke candidate reports make it clear if candidates possess the innate talents needed to succeed.

Measuring Emotional Intensity in an Interview

During the interview, you can gauge a candidate’s intensity by asking them to describe how they handled past situations.

  • For example, ask them to describe how they felt when challenged at work by a manager or co-worker. A more intense person may describe their emotional state in charged language, whereas a more relaxed person might speak more about how that challenge was addressed.
  • Ask how they tend to handle situations when things aren’t moving as quickly as they expected them to move. Intense people want to make things move more quickly, so you’d expect them to take steps to force the issue rather than being patient and waiting for things to get moving.

Berke includes interview guides tailored to each candidate. Each guide offers questions based candidate’s personality and skills, making it easy to ask thought-provoking questions.

The Berke Personality Assessment

Berke directly measures Intensity, among six other core personality traits, as part of its core assessment.

Our team of workplace psychologists partners with you to develop job profiles that outline what levels of each trait influence success in a given role.

That Job Profile is used to develop the scoring and weighting mechanism for the assessment, helping to identify whether the person is a high, medium, or low fit for the job.
